JOB PURPOSE: The selected candidate will receive and process dispatch and 911 emergency calls requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services in accordance with established procedures in our 24-hour communications facility. Work is performed under immediate supervision. Training is provided in the various aspects of communications work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Determining the nature and location of emergency calls, determining priorities, and dispatching appropriate emergency units.
  • Operating a variety of communications-related equipment including a computer-aided dispatch system.
  • Entering, updating and retrieving information from a variety of computer systems.
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate records and logs of all radio transmissions, telephone calls and other records, files, and information systems.
  • Typing information on a computer keyboard to process or update information accurately.
  • Answering questions and providing information to the public over the telephone.
  • Maintaining accurate, up-to-date files and logs.
  • Relating effectively to those contacted in the course of the workday.
  • Work rotating shift assignments, including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

    DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions in emergency and routine situations and determining how to respond to requests for service.
  • Ability to simultaneously handle a variety of tasks.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies in a controlled and expeditious manner.
  • Ability to deal effectively and professionally with all types of people under very difficult circumstances.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
  • Ability to operate a computer-aided dispatch system plus other communications-related and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to handle restricted information in a professional manner and to maintain the information as such.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, files, and documentation.
  • Ability to work shifts as assigned.

    SPECIAL JOB DEMANDS:

  • Applicants must be willing and able to work rotating shift assignments including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to function in a difficult and stressful work environment.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A high school or vocational school diploma, or, an equivalent combination of training and experience; plus, keyboarding skills.
  • Preference may be given to individuals with previous dispatching experience or to individuals with bilingual skills (English/Spanish).
  • Candidates considered for employment must pass a thorough background investigation including, but not limited to education, work history, and criminal background.

    LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Effective October 1, 2012 any person employed as a 911 public safety telecommunicator must be certified. Any individual hired for this position will be required to complete a specified training program and to pass a certification examination within a specified period of time as a condition of employment. In addition, as mandated by state law, any individual hired for this position will be required to renew his or her certification before February 1 of each odd year as a condition of his or her continued employment. Twenty (20) hours of additional 911 public safety telecommunications training is required for renewal certification.

    EXAMINATION:

  • Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are required to take and pass a computer-based skill assessment consisting of two parts in order to be eligible for consideration for this position. Photo identification is required at time of testing.
  • Applicants whose names are placed on the eligible list will be presented to the hiring department for their review and consideration.
  • Placement on the eligible list does not guarantee employment.
  • Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
