Congressional candidate backs off abortion remark

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? A Republican congressional candidate in California is backing off remarks he made that women who have abortions are more likely to get cancer.

The Sacramento Bee reports (http://bit.ly/Qc8jVt) Doug LaMalfa made the statement Monday during a debate, then repeated them to KRCR-TV.

A link between abortion and breast cancer has been the subject of medical studies but groups such as the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute concluded no scientific evidence backed such claims.

LaMalfa's campaign said in a statement Tuesday that he was misinformed. His consultant says the 1st Congressional District front-runner relied on information he read several years ago.

A fellow Republican, Senate hopeful Todd Akin, made headlines this summer over his comments that women could thwart pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape."

Walker School Holds Annual Bike Rodeo - Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills ...

The following is a release from Community Consolidated School District 181:

On Sept. 5 students from Walker School participated in the annual bike rodeo, an event that?ensures students are safe and registered bicycle riders.

Clarendon Hills Police Department Officer Rick Talerico said?the Walker bike rodeos have taken place since 1986. PTO bike rodeo co-chair Len Austin has helped organize?the program at Walker for the last several years and believes in its value.

?The bike rodeo is about safety,? Austin said. ?We check the students? helmets, bike chains and air pressure.?

The last stop on the rodeo is a road?test to ensure the students can ride their bikes comfortably. The officers on hand work with the PTO to get?bikes registered, as well, assigning each bike a number and engraving that onto the frame to aid in theft?recovery.

While there is no village ordinance requiring families to register their bikes, there is a school?requirement that bikes be registered before they can be used for transportation to school.

The PTO volunteers?who led the event remarked that many families participate in the rodeo not just for the engraving, but also for?the safety lessons and helpful service.

Recipe app aims to provide inspiration for meals

TORONTO (Reuters) - Anyone looking to expand their culinary horizons beyond steak and potatoes or spaghetti may find inspiration in a new app that provides recipes based on what is already stocked in the refrigerator.

Gojee, for iPad, iPhone and Android devices, aims to inspire food lovers by providing recipes that incorporate particular ingredients, rather than for an exact dish.

Lobster lovers can swipe through full-screen photos and recipes for dishes such as lobster carpaccio, butter-poached lobster with fresh tomatoes, or lobster macaroni and cheese with truffles.

"Its biggest value is in a new way to cook something, whether it's chicken or pork or turkey or fish. Often the way it's prepared is what is unique," said Michael Lavalle, co-founder and CEO of New York City-based start-up Gojee.

The app aims to replicate the experience of being in a restaurant, where a diner might see a tantalizing dish zoom by and decide that it is worth ordering.

"You didn't need to see 15 data points to have a hunch it was going to be good," Lavalle said.

The app is focused more on discovery than leading a cook to an exact dish. But the company is hoping that users will also tote the newly released mobile app along with them as a tool at the grocery store.

A shopper, for example, might walk into a store and see fresh salmon on sale, and perhaps also have some fresh cilantro at home they need to use. They could then plug these two ingredients into the app and find recipes that incorporate them, such as a salmon curry or roasted salmon with pink peppercorn sauce, and purchase the extra ingredients they would need.

Gojee has fewer filters than other recipe services, but there is the option to filter out recipes that include particular ingredients, which Lavalle said is helpful for picky eaters or people with allergies.

"You can put in gluten-free or vegetarian and it restricts the recipes to those parameters," he explained.

The service includes over 10,000 recipes from approximately 300 food bloggers around the world. For cocktail lovers, there is also a separate drinks section.

But the app will not help people looking for variations on a particular dish because it was not developed with that focus.

"It's much more inspiration driven than utility driven," Lavalle said.

The company plans to expand beyond recipes into other areas such as home decor, women's fashion and art.

"Our overarching goal is to define and carve out the mobile Web that's emotional, pleasurable and visual," Lavalle added.

YouTube offers new iPhone app to fill looming void

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? YouTube is being reprogrammed for the iPhone and iPad amid the latest fallout from the growing hostility between Google and Apple.

The changes are being made because Google Inc. and Apple Inc. didn't renew a five-year licensing agreement that established YouTube's video service as one of the built-in applications in the operating system that runs the iPhone and iPad.

YouTube is being bumped from the menu of pre-installed apps on the next version of Apple's mobile operating system, or iOS, which could be released as early as Wednesday when the latest iPhone is expected to be unveiled.

Google is making a pre-emptive strike on Tuesday with the release of a revamped YouTube application. The app is designed to make it as easy as possible for the tens of millions of iPhone and iPad owners to continue watching clips from the world's most popular video site.

The new YouTube app will create more moneymaking opportunities for Google and video producers because it allows advertising to be shown with the clips. That's something Apple hasn't allowed on the pre-installed YouTube app. The ban on ads prevented many music videos and other widely watched clips from being shown in the iOS app because some copyright owners don't allow their content to be shown if there is no way for them to be paid.

Removing the advertising limitations will mean users of the new iOS app can watch YouTube videos that already have been available on smartphones and tablet computers running on Google's Android software said, Francisco Varela, YouTube's global director of platform partnerships.

"We are offering a better user experience to iPhone users," Varela said of the new YouTube app. "We will now have content parity on all our mobile platforms."

Apple had no comment on Google's claims.

The new YouTube app is tailored for the iPhone, although it will work on the iPad, too. A retooled app specifically tailored for the iPad is supposed to be released in the next few months.

As has always been the case, YouTube's videos also can be watched through Web browsers that work on iOS, including Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome.

YouTube could still end up losing some of its audience on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch because device owners will have to go to Apple's App Store to download the free program. YouTube says mobile viewers collectively watch more than 1 billion clips per day.

Many of those YouTube viewers watch on Android devices that have become Apple's bane. Before he died 11 months ago, former Apple CEO Steve Jobs told his biographer Walter Isaacson that he viewed Android as a "stolen product" and vowed to get even with Google and its partners for ripping off his company's ideas.

The vendetta has spurred a series of lawsuits against Android device makers, including a case that culminated last month when a jury awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages after concluding Samsung Electronics violated iPhone patents.

Apple has also lashed out by removing Google's digital maps as the automatic navigation system on its family of mobile devices. That change will also occur when the next version of iOS comes out. The upgrade will feature Apple's own mobile mapping system.

That switch could hurt Google because maps are a key piece of the company's plans to sell more ads to local merchants.

Google wanted to gain more control over how YouTube worked on Apple's products, a goal that led to a decision to give up YouTube's prized status as a built-in app despite the potential loss in traffic. The licensing agreement allowed Apple to design the YouTube app for the iOS.

"They have been a great partner," Varela said of Apple. "Together, we have absolutely changed the mobile ecosystem. This is just the next evolution in this partnership. We are the only people that can build the best YouTube app."

Inhabitat's Week in Green: fluorescent bulb moon, fuel-efficient supersonic jet and a toxin-eating oyster park

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

Inhabitat's Week in Green

Man-made technology is great, but Mother Nature is the greatest inventor of them all -- and scientists are discovering new ways to take advantage of the tools found in nature. Take, for example, a team of researchers from Vanderbilt University who developed a solar cell using the photosynthetic protein found in spinach. In New York, Scape Studio has proposed to use the oyster's natural cleaning ability to help clean up the contaminated waters of the Gowanus Canal. The firm has received funding to create Oyster-tecture, an oyster park at the mouth of the canal where millions of mollusks will "eat" toxins. Meanwhile, the US Forest Service has been deriving cellulose nanocrystals from wood pulp extract to create a material that's stronger than Kevlar and carbon fiber.

Is Your Sales Message Unethical And Does It ... - Internet Marketing

Online business strategies

Will an Unethical Sales Message Make Sales? and Should You Use One?

Every week it feels like there is a brand new product launch? all pushed by affiliates and all claiming that you can make a fast/quick buck online.

Now, these types of product don?t really appeal to us, however one launch did catch my eye? not because of the product but the way the sales letter positioned it.

The sales letter took a stance that I have not seen in the Internet Marketing arena before although I have seen similar ones, but less hard hitting (!), in the life insurance arena.

In a nut shell the letter told a story of a lady who on the surface appeared to have the perfect life, great husband, lovely children and everything was going right for them.

In fact it was so good they decided to move house to a bigger better one? and that?s when it started to fall apart.

The sales letter told of how her perfect husband had been having an affair and how he moved out and left her with the children.

Sad, but she still had the house and children etc.

But here?s the kicker?the sales letter then said that her husband was killed in an accident and he didn?t have any life insurance?she was left with a mountain of bills and growing debt.

TIME OUT

How would you feel reading a letter like that?

Think about it?it had drawn you in with a story and then hit you with a killer blow.

Carrying on with the sales letter, it detailed how she needed money fast and, of course, started an online business that generated her cash quickly (what else:-) and you could do the same thing.

I don?t know how you would react, but my first reaction was to think, hmm, that?s stooping a bit low.

I wasn?t enraged as some people have been but it didn?t leave me feeling good, in fact I had to take a reality check to get my mind back on track and the negative thoughts gone.

The letter had actually altered my state of mind.

Now, I do believe that if this letter was read by anyone who needed money quickly or was desperate to start an online business it would have succeeded in getting the sale.

However, even after taking a step back and looking at the sale letter objectively I just couldn?t bring myself to accept that I would ever use such a tactic so sell a product outside of the life assurance/funeral markets!

How about you?

Was the launch of the product successful?

I don?t know, however it was being pushed by the usual suspects in that field and I?m sure it did very well. Will it generate sales? most definitely!

Unethical? Depends on your conscience I guess?

Until next time,
Don

France's Hollande pledges spending cuts, tax reforms

PARIS (Reuters) - France's Socialist government insisted on Friday it would press ahead with spending cuts and promised tax reforms next year, denying reports it was watering down flagship measures such as a 75 percent tax on the rich.

President Francois Hollande, elected in May on a pledge to kick-start growth and raise taxes on the wealthy, said the stagnant economy made it crucial for France to hit its public deficit target of 3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) next year or risk losing investors' trust.

Hollande said that by holding state spending steady in nominal terms next year -- excluding debt servicing and pension payments -- his government would save 10 billion euros in inflation-adjusted terms.

However, that would amount to just one-third of the more than 30 billion euros in savings which Hollande says are needed to hit next year's deficit target and stay on course to balance the budget by the end of his five-year mandate.

With his government refusing to cut staffing levels, the bulk of the adjustment will have to come from tax rises.

"This will be the biggest effort in 30 years," Hollande said at a ceremony at the state auditor's office, promising "audacious" tax reforms and other changes.

France's deficit has not slipped beneath the EU threshold of 3 percent since 2007, when it stood at 2.7 percent of GDP.

After years of crisis that have driven state debt to 90 percent of GDP, Hollande said servicing payments were now the second largest budget item, making adjustment more complex.

Markets and EU partners alike see the spending plan as a crucial test of Hollande's reformist mettle, but there is little sign yet of far-reaching reforms next year.

France has not balanced its budget since 1974 and state spending is now 56 percent of economic output - second only to Denmark in the West.

The budget will be presented at a September 28 cabinet meeting, pushed back by two days to allow for Hollande's trip to the United Nations' General Assembly in New York, officials said.

NO DECISION ON 75 PCT TAX

Following newspaper reports that the government was preparing to water down a pledge to tax earnings above 1 million euros a year at 75 percent, cabinet heavyweights quickly came out to say it would go ahead as promised.

"President Francois Hollande made a clear, strong commitment during the campaign to tax high earners at 75 percent," Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici told local media. "This promise will be strictly respected."

Labour Minister Michel Sapin, meanwhile, said the measure would go ahead but some nuances would be introduced: while the threshold of 1 million euros for a single person would stand, it would be set higher for couples.

Referring to reports in right-leaning Le Figaro that artists and sportsmen could be exempted, Sapin said the tax would be based on average earnings over a long period so those receiving a temporary spike in their earnings would not be hit.

He did not comment on reports in right-leaning Le Figaro newspaper that the CSG and CRDS social charges would be included in the headline rate -- suggesting the effective rate of income tax would be around 67 percent.

"We have not finalized the proposal ... It will be decided next week: between the reality of next week and the suppositions of today there may be some difference," he said.

Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici last week told business leaders the government was seeking an "intelligent" way to implement the tax without driving away investors.

Le Figaro, without citing sources, also said the government would postpone plans to raise corporate tax on large firms to 35 percent from the current rate of 33 percent, while slashing it to 15 percent for small businesses.

A new study has found that childhood obesity rates for schoolchildren in Philadelphia declined slightly between 2006 and 2010.

Researchers analyzed data for four years in the city?s schools. The findings are being reported in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease, but the authors are being cautious about what they think may be responsible for the drop.

The study says the prevalence of obesity decreased from 21.5 percent in 2006-2007 to 20.5 percent in 2009-2010. It also says the prevalence of severe obesity decreased from 8.5 percent to 7.9 percent.

The city, once labeled the fattest city in the country by Men?s Fitness magazine, has taken numerous measures to cut down on childhood obesity. Those efforts include the removal of sugar-sweetened sodas from schools a few years ago.

Plumbing 101: Emergency and Non-Emergency Maintenance ...

You're most likely aware of plumbing problems that need unexpected emergency plumbing services even when it's Labor Day in Toronto, however what about those that are considered non-emergencies? Unexpected emergency plumbing services cost relatively higher than basic replacement services, remember. To help you out, right here are some common plumbing problems and their classifications:

Kitchen sink backup

A kitchen area sink that backs up is generally attributed to an obstruction in the drain, and this certainly needs expert plumbing services-- but not always unexpected emergency services. You can request a quote from your plumbing technician and expect a call back from them so you can both agree on a routine for the repair work. While hanging around, prevent utilizing the affected kitchen area sink to prevent more difficulties.

Running toilet

A leaking toilet is something any property owner should fret about as it can increase the water bill. It's essential to get the services of a plumbing contractor, but not on an emergency basis. While waiting, you can simply shut off the water valve whenever you have to leave the house and turn it on when you get home.

Noisy pipelines

Any rattling noise you hear when you switch on the restroom or cooking area sink means that the pipelines aren't secured properly and may be striking against a wall. While it's most definitely a disorder, this does not qualify as an emergency service. Book a Toronto plumbing professional who can easily figure out where the noisy pipes are as well as subsequently secure loosened pipes by using a U-clamp.

Busted pipes

Water in pipes freezes and expands throughout winter months, triggering pipes to explode. Burst pipes can cause more damage than a temporary loss of water supply since they can easily trigger flooding in your house. The moment you notice any sort of wet spots on your walls or floors, call on plumbers Toronto homeowners trust to offer emergency services.

Sump pump failing

If your basement has flooded, this is most likely due to a sump pump failure. Sump pump outlets are generally located near water, and handling replacements by yourself could possibly pose safety dangers. Do not lose any time and call on the professionals in plumbing in Toronto. For even more info, visit plumbing.about.com/od/basics/a/When-To-Call-A-Professional-Plumber.htm.

Britons take workplace religion fight to Europe rights court

PARIS (Reuters) - British employers trample on religious freedoms by barring staff from wearing crosses at work, requiring them to provide sex advice to gays, or to preside at same-sex civil partnership ceremonies, four Christians told Europe's top rights court on Tuesday.

The cases provide a further test for the European court, which has in the past allowed member states considerable leeway concerning workplace tolerance of religious beliefs and symbols.

The plaintiffs, aged 51 to 61, told the European Court of Human Rights, based in the eastern French city of Strasbourg, that British law discriminated against them and failed to protect their religious freedom at the workplace.

A decision from the court, a body under the aegis of the Council of Europe, could take several months.

One plaintiff, Nadia Eweida, was sent home without pay from British Airways in 2006 for wearing a small silver cross around her neck that violated the company's dress code.

"Considering that we spend 80 percent of our time at work, what would be the value of a right that stops the minute one enters the workplace?" Eweida's lawyer, James Dingemans, argued.

Dingemans told the rights court his client worked alongside colleagues who were allowed to wear religious symbols such as the Sikh turban, the Muslim headscarf or the Jewish skullcap.

In a similar incident, nurse Shirley Chaplin was told by her employers to remove a crucifix around her neck as it could cause injury if a patient pulled at it.

Both of their cases were dismissed by British labor courts.

The European court was also asked to rule on two other cases focusing on the tasks employees were asked to carry out at work. Those claims had also been rejected by Britain's labor courts.

One plaintiff, Gary McFarlane, was dismissed from a national counseling service when his employers judged him unwilling to offer sex advice to homosexual couples. Another, Lilian Ladele, refused to officiate at civil partnership ceremonies for gay couples as part of her duties as a registrar.

A lawyer for the British government made a distinction between religious practices protected by the state and the display of personal convictions that can be regulated.

"The petitioners had the possibility of expressing their religious convictions outside of the professional sphere," lawyer James Eadie told the court.

The human rights court has in the past given considerable leeway to member states to regulate the wearing of religious dress and display religious symbols in public, especially in cases involving Islamic dress.

In one previous case, the court ruled that a French school could make its Muslim students remove their headscarves during sports classes for safety reasons. In another, it found that an Italian state school did not violate the rights to religious freedom or education by displaying crucifixes in classrooms.

Rulings by the human rights court cannot be appealed and signatories must comply or risk exclusion from the Council of Europe.

Feds urge judge to ignore BP's claim that Gulf is making 'robust recovery' from 2010 oil spill

The Justice Department is urging a federal judge to ignore BP's assertion that the Gulf Coast's natural resources are making a "robust recovery" from its massive 2010 oil spill.

In a court filing Friday, government lawyers also renewed their vow to prove at trial that BP engaged in gross negligence or willful misconduct leading up to the deadly rig explosion that killed 11 workers and spawned the nation's worst offshore oil spill. BP PLC faces billions of dollars in fines if U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier ultimately sides with the government.

The memo's combative language is a sign that BP and the Justice Department aren't close to a settlement that would resolve the federal government's claims against the oil giant before a trial scheduled for next year.

"It's a shot across the bow," said David Uhlmann, a University of Michigan law professor and former chief of the Justice Department's environmental crimes section. "Generally speaking, when you see the government use such strong language, it's intended to signal its readiness to go to trial."

In the filing, government lawyers accuse BP executives of trying to minimize their role in the disaster and shift blame to blue-collar rig workers and their partners on the drilling project, including rig owner Transocean Ltd.

"The behavior, words, and actions of these BP executives would not be tolerated in a middling size company manufacturing dry goods for sale in a suburban mall," they wrote. "Yet they were condoned in a corporation engaged in an activity that no less a witness than (former BP chief executive) Tony Hayward himself described as comparable to exploring outer space."

The Justice Department was responding to a BP memo urging Barbier to sign off on a proposed settlement of economic damage claims filed by tens of thousands of Gulf Coast residents and businesses. The government said that it doesn't take a position on the merits of that deal but that BP's Aug. 13 memo contained "plainly misleading representations" that shouldn't go unchecked.

For instance, government attorneys said it's premature for BP to pass judgment on the health of the Gulf of Mexico's ecosystem.

"While it is true that many resources are in a better condition than at the height of the spill ? after all, they are no longer slathered in layers of BP's oil ? it is also true they continue to suffer significant harm from the spill, and it is not possible at this time to conclude that they have recovered, despite the information that BP presents," they wrote.

The Justice Department also says BP and Transocean rig supervisors and BP engineers could have prevented the Macondo well from blowing out if they correctly interpreted the results of a critical safety test shortly before the blast.

"That such a simple, yet fundamental and safety-critical test could have been so stunningly, blindingly botched in so many ways, by so many people, demonstrates gross negligence," the filing says.

BP said the Justice Department's memo makes it clear the federal government isn't opposed to its proposed settlement with private plaintiffs' attorneys. BP and plaintiffs' attorneys both believe the settlement is "fair, reasonable and adequate" and meets all the legal requirements for Barbier's final approval, the company said in a statement.

"Other issues raised by the government simply illustrate that disputes about the underlying facts remain. BP believes it was not grossly negligent and looks forward to presenting evidence on this issue at trial in January," the company said.

Russia to put shock images on cigarette packs

Russia on Monday unveiled a series of graphic images, including of a gangrenous foot and a still-born baby, that will be printed on cigarette packs as the country tries to trim its sky-high rates of smoking.

The health ministry published photographs on its website for use by cigarette companies, which will be obliged to print them on cigarette packs from May next year as Russia tightens its laws towards a Western-style crackdown on smoking.

The pictures show a blue-tinted image of a dead baby and a graphic image of a blackened gangrenous foot, as well as more figurative images such as a woman's hand making a "thumbs-down" gesture to represent impotency.

"Global experience shows that shocking pictures on cigarette packs significantly influenced changes in perception of smoking by smokers themselves," the ministry said.

The average Russian smoker consumes 17 cigarettes per day, with men smoking an average of 18 cigarettes and women 13, the health ministry said, citing the World Health Organisation's Global Adult Tobacco Survey statistics.

The survey published in 2009 found that 39.1 percent of Russians smoked, which the WHO said was one of the world's highest rates of tobacco use.

Deputy health minister Sergei Velmyaikin estimated that Russia lost almost 1.5 trillion rubles ($46 billion) per year from tobacco-related deaths among people of working age, the Interfax news agency reported.

The WHO said that graphic warnings on packs would be a "major step forward in The Russian Federation to be compliant with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control."

Russia two years ago introduced large written warnings of the health consequences of smoking on packs, following Western practice.

On Friday, the health ministry submitted a draft bill to lawmakers that would introduce Western-style smoking bans in restaurants from 2014 in a country where non-smoking areas are still usually a token gesture.

Rebels hit army headquarters in Damascus

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian rebels said they planted bombs inside the Syrian army's General Staff headquarters in central Damascus on Sunday as President Bashar al-Assad's forces bulldozed buildings to the ground in parts of the capital that have backed the uprising.

Syrian state television said four people were wounded in what it called a terrorist attack on the General Staff compound in the highly guarded Abu Rummaneh district, where another bomb attack killed four of Assad's top lieutenants two months ago.

"The operation targeted officers in the Assad army who have been planning and giving the go ahead for the massacres against the Syrian people," said a video statement by the Grandsons of the Prophet brigade, a division of the Free Syrian Army.

"Bombs were planted inside the army headquarters," said the video statement, which was broadcast on Arab satellite channels.

But as the rebels demonstrated they could strike at the heart of the security apparatus, residents said army bulldozers moved on al-Zayat and Farouk neighborhoods to the west, and destroyed at least 20 buildings in the Sunni Muslim areas that have sheltered the insurgents.

In the eastern Damascus neighborhood of Hazza, footage taken by activists on Sunday showed several buildings on fire. Opposition sources said the army had earlier stormed the area and executed 27 young men.

"Any youth of fighting age seems to have been captured and killed," said activist Obadah al-Haj, who had fled the area.

Activist video footage from the area showed a young man lying dead beside a yellow taxi, shot in the face. Another dead youth was in the driver seat, blood covering his head and chest.

Assad belongs to the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam that has dominated power since members of the sect led a military coup in 1963. Assad's father took power in 1970.

Loyalist forces killed at least 25 men on Sunday when they shelled and stormed al-Fan, a Sunni village in the province of Hama, opposition campaigners said.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights said most of the men appear to have been killed by shelling, but an unspecified number were executed when troops stormed the village later. The official state news agency said a military operation on Fan targeted "terrorists who were scaring citizens".

Video footage from Fan taken by activists showed women and family members crying over bodies wrapped in white sheets and placed in a row on the floor of a mosque.

AIR ATTACKS

As the uprising in Syria has spread, it has taken on a more sectarian bent, with activists saying Assad's best trained forces from the mostly Alawite Fourth Division and the Republican Guards are spearheading the fight in the capital.

Assad, who is backed by Shi'ite Iran and its Hezbollah Lebanese proxy, has lost control of rural areas in northern, eastern and southern regions and has used helicopter gunships and fighter jets to try to subdue the opposition.

But the aerial bombardment has driven fresh waves of refugees into neighboring countries, reviving Turkish calls for "safe zones" to be set up on Syrian territory.

With Russia and China blocking action by the U.N. Security Council however and little appetite among Western states, or Turkey itself, for committing troops to secure such zones, there is scant chance they will be set up any time soon.

Rebels said they seized an air defense facility and attacked a military airport in the eastern province of Deir al Zor on Saturday. Video footage showed a walled army command centre in the province coming under attack.

In the southern city of Deraa, which stands between Damascus and Jordan, troops continued razing and bulldozing houses in the old part of the city for a third day after army shelling and aerial bombardment drove 40,000 people from there to Jordan.

Free Syrian Army fighters had left, their light weapons no match to the firepower of Assad's forces, residents said.

"There are around 20 homes that have been demolished and 200 burnt," said Ahmad Abu Nabout, a resident of Deraa. "Old Deraa is deserted. Troops cover up their looting by burning the homes or in some cases blowing them up."
