PFT: College coach criticizes combine beast Poe

undefeated

Last week, we told you?that the documentary ?Undefeated? produced by former NFL player Ed Cunningham was up for best documentary at the Oscars.

In the meantime, the film won the award, the director become temporarily infamous, and I went to see the movie with my wife.

I?m no Will Leitch when it comes to film reviews, but this was an incredible moviegoing experience. If you read this site, you probably love football. It?s hard to imagine anyone that loves football not falling in love with this movie.

The filmakers follow coach Bill Courtney and the?2009?Manassas High School football team in Memphis, Tennessee. At one point, Courtney speaks to his team and points out that he?s never made a tackle or a completion; that the players earned their success and deserve the credit.?The story is beautifully told, but I couldn?t help but think Courtney and his players like Money, Chavis, and O.C. Brown deserve a lot of credit for the film winning the Oscar.

The characters and stories are so rich it?s almost hard to believe it?s a documentary. ?One scene where Chavis speaks to the team is among the most emotional scenes I?ve ever seen on screen.

This is Friday Night Lights the TV show, but real. Or the book Friday Night Lights?come to life. ?Or Hoop Dreams for football.

The film is only playing in a few?theaters?around the country, but it?s expanding this weekend. Judging by the five people total in the theater Monday night, it should arrive on DVD and Netflix soon enough. Just see it, okay?

Team Building Goals ? What Are the Objectives regarding Team ...

Achievement in developing high executing teams in any organisation provides huge positive aspects for the enterprise, its Clients, the teams and for each and every team associate. To achieve success in team building, it is important to have a small focus on the goals and objectives, as well as on the main advantages of team building with the specific enterprise or business office.

The Overall Aims
Some think this is regarding playing foolish games, or indulging in expensive and inconsequential out of work actions. The managers or entrepreneurs who think this will swiftly dismiss the idea as a total waste of cash and energy. Other people who have difficulties in their business office with clash in groups, poor overall performance or demotivated personnel may see team building events as optimistic, but as a possible unattainable aim. They do not have a definite understanding of team building events, or, certainly of the position of leadership in attaining high performance.

Team building is a Procedure that takes place as time passes. The start of the process is where there is often a group of people, several, and a head. The end in the process is where there is a substantial performing staff, who are extremely motivated to perform better and better, who have well-developed functions and programs to arrange their work, and who gain huge satisfaction using their shared successes.

The overall targets are to do this high performance, to build up the group through the numerous stages regarding development, until finally it attains high performance. Even so, like any other process, you will find different measures or phases, and there are quite different goals and objectives at each stage. Focussing on the RIGHT targets at each stage, and varying your objectives as you go through the process, will help you achieve high performance.

The actual Objectives at Stage 1
At the first stage regarding team building, the actual Forming stage, there are quite identifiable goals and objectives. These targets MUST be achieved before the group can begin the next stage. It is the position of the head of the staff to ensure the targets are achieved.

The targets at the Forming stage are:
1. To bind the actual group, so that they get to know each other and begin using a sense of staff. It is during this period that team building events activities will help bind these people.
2. To align these to their distributed purpose, targets and objectives
3. To determine a positive staff culture, the actual beliefs, valuations and some social norms of behavior
4. To determine the position of the head

The Aims at the 2nd Stage
Some of the initial targets will continue by way of this stage, but other goals will be introduced to produce the team further. This stage is called the actual Storming stage, exactly where members may well challenge their own shared objective, the leadership or the some social norms of behavior.

The targets at this stage are:
1. To ensure they are aligned to their purpose and goals
A couple of. To develop good working human relationships between all members, going for experience of working together with different associates
3. To nurture distributed problem fixing and making new concepts
4. Show them processes so that they work effectively jointly e.g. daily huddles, flash problem fixing meetings, standard state regarding play meetings, communication programs etc.
Your five. To establish clear short term targets and methods pertaining to celebrating achievements and goals

The Aims at the Third Stage
In the event the team has worked through the Storming stage, they will have turn into closer, and will have a deep a feeling of working together to attain their distributed purpose. This kind of stage is known as the Norming stage, where these people work well jointly and has efficient processes and systems.
To get the team to another location stage, the main focus changes.

Very few teams attain the fourth stage, the high executing team. The explanation for this usually is that they really go to town the Norming stage. To move they forward, the aim now is to change the focus quite dramatically.

So far, the idea has been that there is no ?I? in staff. The objective is usually to bind they together to attain their distributed targets. The objective is to find the ?I? back to the Crew, to hold these people together, and also to develop individual excellence and specialism.

The targets at this stage are -
A single. To increase the company knowledge, so that the team and individual members are able to take on a lot more responsibility
A couple of. To motivate problem fixing, innovation and leadership pertaining to specific jobs or responsibilities. The leader associates to the staff, or to small project groups.
3. To change or affect the processes so that they take on a lot more responsibility. Crew meetings lessen, team project teams improve. Leadership regarding projects or meetings swivels.
4. To get the team to put its own targets

Facebook's honeymoon with social gaming is over, report claims

After several years of incredible growth, Facebook's gaming market could be slowing down, according to a new study from analyst firm IHS.

The report studied recent trends on the major social network, and found that the number of users playing games has stagnated over the last several months, and that increased competition has made it much more difficult for developers to attract and engage new users.

Looking specifically at the platform's growth, IHS found that the number of users playing games on Facebook increased dramatically during 2009 and 2010, but that plateaued in 2011. The report did not provide hard numbers, but said that Facebook as a whole saw continued growth during 2011, while the number of users playing games "changed little."

To put things into perspective, the report said that the percentage of users playing games on Facebook dropped to 25 percent in 2011, down from 50 percent at the end of 2010.

The firm specifically noted that even the platform's biggest game companies have seen lagging performance. The FarmVille giant Zynga, for instance, dropped to 225 million monthly active users by the end of its fourth quarter in 2011, down from 266 million users just one quarter prior.

IHS said with this slowing growth, Facebook developers will need to be more cautious in the months ahead. In particular, the firm noted that acquiring new users has become much more difficult thanks to increasing costs and competition, so developers will need to find new and more efficient ways to attract users to their games.

In addition, Facebook users have begun to trend away from simple, accessible games, and instead have turned to titles that demand more skill or commitment. IHS suggested that developers focus on games that better encourage long-term engagement from their audiences.

MHProNews.com has learned through GizMag Bellomo Architects has designed a modular house that arrives in a ten-foot box and is assembled much like IKEA furniture. Bent steel tubes form the base structure of House Arc, which comes with an easy-to-follow graphic manual and requires no special training to assemble. When completed the 3,000 lb low- impact house has 150 square feet, large windows to allow natural light and a trellis on top to filter out heat. The raised structure allows cooling air to flow underneath, and the design is adaptable for solar panels. Architect Joseph Bellomo says it was originally designed as environmentally sensitive and affordable modular housing, and it could be a backyard retreat; but his motivation was also easy to pack and ship to virtually any location following a catastrophic event.

THEMIS celebrates 5 years of watching aurora and space weather

THEMIS celebrates 5 years of watching aurora and space weather [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 17-Feb-2012

People still talk about the launch. It was the first and so far, only time NASA has launched five satellites at one time. Carefully balanced inside a Delta II rocket, the five THEMIS (short for Timed History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) spacecraft were launched into space from Cape Canaveral at 6:01 p.m. ET on February 17, 2007. The spacecraft were nestled in a ring shape, four around the outside and one on a middle pedestal. A critical sequencing guided how each spacecraft launched into space, first the top one, then the ones on the outside, so the platform would remain balanced and stable.

"The launch of THEMIS was one of the first Explorer missions I oversaw from concept through launch and on-orbit checkout and it still stands out in my mind," says Willis Jenkins, the Program Executive for NASA's Explorers Program, a program that supports less expensive and highly focused missions. "Trying to get five spacecraft together on one rocket was a challenge, but our team came up with unique ways to build and launch them."

Those five satellites working in tandem was crucial for THEMIS' job of tracking energy as it moves through space. Energy and radiation from the sun impacts and changes Earth's magnetic environment, the magnetosphere, and such impacts cause "space weather" that can harm satellites in space. As they orbit around Earth, the THEMIS satellites work together to gather data on how any given space weather event travels through space something impossible to understand with a single spacecraft, which cannot differentiate between an occurrence that happens throughout space, rather than in a single location. Since 2007, the THEMIS satellites have reinvigorated studies of the magnetosphere, mapping the details of how explosive auroras occur, how the solar wind transfers energy to Earth's space environment, and how chirping waves in space relate to blinking auroras on Earth.

During its prime, two-year mission, THEMIS' main objective was to pinpoint where a space weather phenomenon known as substorms originate. Substorms generate aurora, but before THEMIS launched no one knew exactly what created the onset of a substorm.

"Five years ago, the state of the field could be described in one word: confusion," says Vassilis Angelopoulos, a space scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the principal investigator for THEMIS. "We didn't understand the chain that linked energy from the sun to the aurora. We didn't know what mechanism caused substorms. We didn't know where, in the vast area of space, the process happened."

THEMIS answered those questions early on. Using its five satellites, as well as an array of some 25 ground based instruments, the THEMIS team could watch how the substorms formed and how they correlated to events in the night sky.

Together, the instruments painted a complete picture of aurora formation. A diffuse, weak aurora is always present near the poles, but can't always be seen with the naked eye. Brighter ones require an influx of energy from the sun that starts when the solar wind's magnetic field swings around, in the opposite direction of Earth's own magnetic field. Under such conditions, the solar wind rips off Earth's magnetic field lines from the day side, pulling them around to the night side, where they pile up, storing vast amounts of energy until they release in explosive bursts of magnetic reconnection. The surge of radiation and magnetism that rebounds toward Earth in this case is a substorm, complete with its attendant aurora.

After the first two years, NASA extended the THEMIS mission, which went on to track other space weather processes as they travel near Earth. THEMIS discovered the critical importance of something called "dipolarization fronts," bursts of material and energy that collapse Earth's magnetic field at the beginning of a substorm. These fronts are blobs of magnetized material, or plasma, with temperatures of one million degrees and speeds of one million miles per hour that race toward Earth. THEMIS satellites have observed them ramming into the near-Earth region, injecting hyper fast electrons -- which can damage computer systems -- into the region of space where geosynchronous satellites reside with their sensitive electronics.

Scientists have also compared THEMIS space and ground-based data to solve a long standing space mystery of what caused "pulsating" aurora, beautiful emission patterns in which the aurora appear to blink. The aurora's pulses corresponded perfectly to something much higher in space called "chorus waves," so-called because in ground radio receivers they sound like a chorus of chirping bird-songs.

"With five satellites we've been able to pin down the topology and structure of the magnetosphere," says David Sibeck, the project scientist for THEMIS at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "THEMIS truly mapped out how the magnetic fields outside the magnetosphere append to Earth's magnetic boundaries, transferring energy and material into our system."

With five years under its belt, two new opportunities have opened up THEMIS' research potential beyond the original substorm question. First, two of the original THEMIS satellites have been moved into a new orbit around the moon and have been renamed the ARTEMIS mission. The technical details of moving those two satellites with minimal fuel and numerous gravity assists made orbital flight history as much as the original launch of five spacecraft did. And, as NASA's Jenkins points out, using one Explorer project for two separate missions translates to a great savings in cost.

"Re-purposing this Explorer stands as a prime example of a cost effective mission with a large return on the investment," says Jenkins. "It is a win-win adventure for everyone."

The three THEMIS satellites around Earth are gearing up to add another focus to its mission as well: helping to track energy swells from out in space all the way into the two great belts of radiation known as the Van Allen Radiation Belts that surround Earth.

In the second half of 2012, NASA will launch two new spacecraft, the Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) that will specifically be studying this region and how the belts swell and shrink in response to outside effects. In 2014, NASA will launch four spacecraft called the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission (MMS) that will study the physics of magnetic reconnection at the boundaries of the magnetosphere. The orbit for THEMIS lies in between the orbits for RBSP and MMS. THEMIS has the potential to unify observations from these missions into a nine-satellite global constellation to observe the entire course of energy release from the entire length of its travels from the edges of the magnetosphere to impact with the near-Earth space that is crowded with satellites vulnerable to incoming space weather.

"This kind of operation heralds a new way of conducting space observations by combining the scientific benefits of new hardware with older, but powerful and well-tested satellites," says Angelopoulos. "We have the promise of a qualitative change in our understanding of space weather phenomena, today more than ever before."

Staff who?re more ?linked? tend to produce higher ideas by advantage of having a larger pool of potential critics/collaborators.

These research have shown that innovation management software program fosters a more even enjoying area for thought sharing. Traditional concept sharing spaces like convention rooms or formalized meetings are likely to stifle sure individuals?s creativity. These employees may not feel snug presenting their ideas as a result of they?re afraid of challenging their superiors or beginning a disagreement with a co-worker. Innovation management software program makes it potential for staff to share their thoughts with out feeling the strain of a standard social environment.

The worth of any concept can be measured against the number of people who participated in its formation. An concept that originates from a lone individual without any sort of input from others tends to be less useful than an concept that has been exposed to a number of people. This is especially true in an organization environment, the place ideas need to represent not just the targets of the person, but in addition the larger goals of the company itself.

Innovation software program helps harness worker innovation by creating a place the place employees can deliver up their concepts?justice coupons after which develop them into actionable methods or products. Very like a virtual drafting board where ideas might be constructively mentioned and improved, innovation software permits folks from all departments of a company to connect and share their thoughts.

The weird sparks which will fly between any two members of a company who beforehand had nothing is frequent? is without doubt one of the unexpected perks of innovation software. An employee from the HR division could possibly share a thought that evokes an employee from the R&D division, main to a cost savings in vitality use or general better deployment of resources. The worth of an thought improves as extra people are in a position to point out how it can be specifically applied to the scenario of a specific company. And who knows the scenario of a company better than the people who comprise it? Innovation management software helps form connections with the benefit of a mouse-click.

Japan planned review of tsunami risk, but too late (AP)

TOKYO ? Four days before a tsunami devastated a Japanese nuclear plant, its operator promised a fuller assessment of the risk of such a disaster ? but not for seven months.

The disclosure in a three-page briefing paper obtained by The Associated Press raises questions about whether the utility and regulators were too complacent about studies that suggested a tsunami could overwhelm the defenses at the 40-year-old Fukushima Dai-ichi plant.

It also highlights Japan's slow pace of decision-making on an issue that experts had been warning about for at least 20 months.

"If they had made the decision earlier, then they could have been prepared on March 11," said Hideyuki Hirakawa, an Osaka University expert on governance and the sciences. "There is absolutely nothing you can do in four days."

On March 11, 2011, a 9.0-magnitude offshore earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed about 19,000 people along Japan's northeastern coast. The surge of water knocked out power at the coastal Fukushima plant, leading to the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Tens of thousands have had to leave the area, and it's unclear whether some will ever be able to move back.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. presented the briefing paper, stamped "handle with care," at a meeting with Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency on March 7. The agency released the document to the AP under a public records request.

The paper summarized studies that suggested a tsunami as high as 33 feet (10 meters) might hit the plant, much higher than the 20-foot (six-meter) surge it had been designed to withstand. The actual tsunami was even higher: 45 feet (14 meters).

TEPCO, as the Tokyo-based utility is commonly known, said it would review tsunami preparedness at all its plants by mid-April and present a new assessment of the Fukushima plant by October ? dates listed on the bottom of the first page under "plans for the future."

Masaru Kobayashi, who heads the agency's earthquake-safety section, said he saw the estimates for the first time at the March 7 meeting. "I told them that a speedy response was necessary, if these numbers are true," he said.

But TEPCO spokeswoman Ai Tanaka noted that the government did not order any immediate action. "None of the findings were conclusive," she added.

The report cited 2010 research at the government's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology as saying that two to three more years would be needed to reassess the tsunami risks for northeastern Japan.

However the researcher, Yuichi Namegaya, told the AP that while more time was needed to determine the extent of the risk, the danger was evident. "The studies on a Fukushima tsunami were clear, even before my research," he said.

As early as June 2009, Yukinobu Okamura, a tsunami expert at the same government institute, warned about the need to look more closely at new evidence that a major tsunami called Jogan had hit northeastern Japan in the 9th Century.

"I would like to ask why you have not touched on this at all," Okamura demanded of a panel on nuclear regulatory policy. "I find it unacceptable."

Kobayashi, the regulator, said he called for the March 7 meeting after hearing about research on the Jogan tsunami.

He described the meeting as a polite, perfunctory affair at his agency that lasted 30, maybe 40, minutes.

The document included three diagrams. One was TEPCO's estimate of the maximum tsunami risk, based on 2002 guidelines from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers that were the government-approved standards. The other two were more recent academic projections that suggested the possibility of the higher tsunami.

Kobayashi recalled the meeting after the March 11 tsunami. "The numbers I saw were bigger than what we had earlier assessed," he said. "It had happened, and I felt bad."

Parts of Obama?s mortgage refinancing package will be reality.

The proposals that require congressional approval have little chance, but some of the president?s ideas can be enacted administratively and could begin affecting consumers within weeks.

By Kenneth R. Harney

February 12, 2012

Reporting from Washington

Though it was pronounced dead before arrival by opponents on Capitol Hill, President Obama?s new mortgage refinancing package contained far more than legislative proposals.

In fact, significant portions of it that have received little media coverage require no prior approval from a hyper-partisan Congress and could begin affecting consumers within weeks. Here?s a quick rundown on key segments of the housing proposals with a handicapping of their likely impact this year:

?Going nowhere: If you?ve got an underwater mortgage that isn?t owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, the president?s marquee proposal to help you refinance into a 4% mortgage is not likely to be of assistance. The plan?s core concept of funding your rate cut by levying a fee on the largest banks ? based on their size and the riskiness of their activities ? would be a nonstarter politically even if this weren?t an election year.

?Moving fast: Refinancings can be speeded up administratively by key executive branch agencies, and the new program directs them to do so within the next few weeks wherever possible. For example, the Federal Housing Administration will be removing a major barrier for lenders to streamline refinancings for current, nondelinquent borrowers who want to take advantage of today?s low rates. The FHA no longer will count streamlined refis ? in which some standard underwriting requirements are waived ? against lenders? performance ratings on delinquencies. The fear of getting a poor rating is a powerful deterrent for many lenders against doing streamlined refis because they can lose their eligibility to do loans for the FHA altogether. Removing ratings as a barrier should help significant numbers of FHA borrowers get into a better deal.

At the same time, the White House has ordered all the other federal agencies with home buyer programs to clear the decks for streamlined refis of their existing customers. For example, the Agriculture Department, which runs the third-largest and fastest-growing program ? last fiscal year, its loan guarantees funded more than 130,000 home purchases in communities located on the fringes of major metropolitan areas ? is expected to waive requirements for new credit reports, appraisals and other documentation for streamlined refinancings. The main requirement for hundreds of thousands of existing USDA borrowers who want to switch to a lower loan rate: just be on time with your current payments.

?Coming your way: a mortgage servicing ?bill of rights?: Though some reforms already are in place, the White House is requiring all federal housing agencies to enforce minimum standards on mortgage servicers, including mandating immediate interventions with offers of forbearance or loan modification at the earliest hints that an owner is facing financial strains. For borrowers, the plan also requires continuous points of contact with a customer service employee of the servicer plus access upon request to all relevant documents the servicer maintains on the borrower?s account. For homeowners who are turned down for a modification or other assistance, the plan requires a guaranteed right of appeal in ?a formal review process? to give the borrowers a second chance.

?Long shot but could happen: The federal regulatory agency that oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in conservatorship disagrees, but the White House believes that both companies could eliminate all closing costs for large numbers of underwater borrowers who want to refinance into shorter-term loans and rebuild their equity. The idea is aimed at potentially hundreds of thousands of owners whose loans already are owned or backed by Fannie and Freddie.

To encourage them to use their refinancing savings to pay down their principal debt faster, the program would eliminate all closing fees for borrowers who opted for loan terms of 20 years or less. The refinancers generally would end up paying roughly the same amount per month on their loans, but the compressed amortization schedule would reduce the principal much faster than a standard 30-year payoff schedule.

Don?t count this one out. It?s a potential winner for borrowers if the legal issues can be resolved.

Help Your Small Business Succeed With A Credit Card | Personal ...

Help Your Small Business Succeed With A Credit Card ImageOne of the many difficulties of starting a small business is gaining access to capital during the startup phase. With the large growth in small specialty businesses across the country, credit card companies are beginning to design special programs to help this new breed of business achieve success. For even those small businesses that have access to capital, the perks and benefits associated with small business credit card programs, can still be useful to help you compete more effectively in the marketplace. Below are just six of the many ways in which a small business credit card can help your business to operate more smoothly and improve your bottom line.

Ease Your Cash Crunch
A small business credit card can ease your business?s cash woes. Through the development and implementation of a sound financial plan that utilizes a credit card you can guarantee that your business will always meet payroll, be able to purchase inventory on an as needed basis, and manage both seasonal and business fluctuations without depleting your cash reservoir. Another added advantage is the cash advance feature, which allows you to withdraw cash from an ATM to cover emergencies and other unanticipated expenses.

Unlike a personal credit card, a business credit card also provides a business size credit line, which is substantially higher.

Keep Track of Business Expenses
Through the use of a credit card, you can, with little to no effort, separate your business expenses from your personal expenses. This allows for easy identification of tax deductions and filing of accurate income tax returns.

Secure Multiple Cards
You can also secure more than one card through small business credit card programs. This allows you to give employees the authority to make purchases while freeing up your schedule for more pressing issues. You can also do this with ease since you are also given the ability to set spending limits for different employees, which will further help you to control your expenses.

Access Free Business Resources
Anything free is good! Some credit card companies also provide clients with a wealth of resources to help manage cash flow and develop good record keeping procedures free of charge. Extensive reporting is conducted on both a monthly and bimonthly basis to help you track your expenses down to the penny. Additionally, free business checks and electronic funds transfers are also available.

In addition to that, you can also access reports, data and advice on developing business and marketing plans, conducting market analysis, and pricing products through a company?s web site. You can also increase your knowledge of other products and services like software programs that can help your day-to-day operations run more efficiently.

Build Credit to Qualify for Larger Loans
Obtaining a credit card and using it wisely can also be a stepping-stone to help your business qualify and secure a loan with a major bank or venture capitalist firm. By establishing a good relationship and credit history with a company that also offers other products and services, it?ll just be a matter of time before other cost-saving services are thrown your way.

Perks and Rewards
Perks and Reward Programs designed especially for small businesses are by far one of the best features of a small business credit card program. Small businesses can earn airline points and cash back rewards just like the big boys. Discounts are also available through select merchants like FedEx and Staples, which can result in huge cost savings for supplies and other operational expenses. Some companies also go an extra mile by providing rental car and lodging benefits.

Why are we even calling it ?Health Insurance?? | RedState

Insurance (n): financial protection against loss or harm:?an arrangement by which a company gives customers financial protection against loss or harm such as theft or illness in return for payment premium.

So, the Obama administration has just announced that all employers will henceforth pay for birth control medications and abortifacients. Setting aside the (substantial) conscience issues that many religiously-motivated employers have with this government compulsion, how exactly is this even ?insurance??

Consider traditional forms of insurance, such as fire, flood, or life insurance. When someone buys these types of insurance, they are protecting themselves against catastrophic financial harm from an unanticipated, unambiguously disastrous event. Nobody would wish a fire or flood on themselves, and by pooling resources, millions of insurance policy holders spread the risk of such events so that everybody pays a little to ensure that nobody suffers the full impact when it happens to them.

In this light, what we are calling ?health insurance? is not health insurance at all. It?s more of a purchasing pool which gives people the right to consume certain goods and services paid by a third party. I can?t think of any other product we buy this way. Imagine paying a flat fee to Safeway for the right to pick up our weekly grocery haul (perhaps with a small co-pay at the cash register) ? and calling it ?food insurance.? Even stranger ? imagine having your employer pay that fee on your behalf as part of your compensation package. Double down on strangeness ? imagine the government organizing purchasing pools for people who can?t afford ?food insurance,? setting standards on what employers must pay for in their ?food insurance? policies, etc.

When you buy groceries, you buy only what you need; you economize by comparing prices across brands and stores; you pay attention to the quality measures that matter to you, such as taste and freshness. Suppose, instead, you knew that you?d be paying $50 regardless of what was in your cart. You might load up on expensive meats and packaged foods, and blow past the plain-tasting generic aisle. (Even if you didn?t, you can bet your neighbor will. So you might as well, right?) To hold down costs, the grocery store might stop carrying premium brands; or it might impose controls, such as no more than two visits per month, and approval by a dietary specialist as a condition to enter the expensive deli section. What do you suppose would happen to the availability, quality, and cost (the real cost, not the out-of-pocket co-pay) of groceries if this was how they were paid for? (Hint: it?s exactly what has happened to health care.)

Getting back to the new Obamacare mandate: Obama?s HHS has decided that our so-called ?health insurance? policies must cover the cost of birth control and abortifacients. I may have found the explanation. In March 2008, candidate Obama famously offered the following remark at a town hall meeting. Speaking about his daughters, he said: ?If they make a mistake, I don?t want them punished with a baby.? (That phrase ? ?punished with a baby? ? is very revealing.) Perhaps this new mandate finally provides a rationale for calling it insurance. It makes sense if you take the view that a pregnancy is nothing but a disaster against which one should take precautions, and a baby is merely a financial catastrophe against which one should be protected.
