Talk ? Why Tim Hawes Fights MS ? MissPar

I almost missed an opportunity to help. I rarely look at the bottom of emails, usually they are confidentiality statements. I happened to look at Tim Hawes link at the bottom of his email: PLEASE HELP ME FIGHT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. I clicked on the link and was moved?really moved.

Not only did I donate, I wanted to feature Tim?s story? why he fights Multiple Sclerosis. I wanted to share his story?so we could help. Who is Tim Hawes? He is the SVP of Retail Licensing for the PGA Tour. He is family man, an avid golfer, a runner and a cyclist for a cause. A cause that is very personal for Tim.

MP: Tim, it astounds me with all of our technology in today?s world, that we cannot find a cure for deadly diseases that are taking the lives of our loved ones. One such disease is Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic, often disabling disease that affects the central nervous system. What is it about MS that speaks to you, to make that extra effort? to get involved?

Tim: This will be my 7th year participating as both a rider and a fundraiser. My aunt is in the advanced stages of being afflicted with this disease and each year I ride both as a tribute to her and as someone dedicated to seeing a time when this disease is officially eradicated. Through efforts like the MS 150, that time will soon come.

MP: You have wholeheartedly jumped on board to do your part, joining TEAM PGA TOUR which encompasses 65 riders, each doing their part to raise monies for the North Florida Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. How many riders are there in total for this event?

Tim: This year, we expect over 2,500 riders to participate and to raise over $1.0 million in contributions.

MP: That is a significant figure that will certainly be put to good use. The ride is a challenging 150 mile ride from St. Augustine to Daytona {the first day} and cycling back to St. Augustine from Daytona the second day. The bike ride alone is impressive. Did you need to train extensively for this ride?

Tim: Most of the riders train pretty extensively for several months prior to the event. As a team, we hold a series of shorter training rides, ranging for 30-70 miles, for people in shape. The training rides help to build camaraderie among the participants and get us physically and emotionally ready for the big day(s).

MP: The ride is officially a 150 mile ride but some of the riders cycle 200 miles What?s the deal there?150 not challenging enough?

Tim: Riders have an optional 25 mile loop at the end of each day for those people who like to do a nice round 100. Doing what?s called a ?century? is kind of a badge of honor for cyclists?.a double century all the more so. I guess if you are going to have thighs that feel like blow torches and calves that are as tight as granite you might as well REALLY go for it?.LOL

MP: TEAM PGA TOUR has raised in donations, over $52,000! You alone have raised over $10,000 becoming a ?Top Banana? which refers to an elite bunch {no pun intended) that have raised over $1000. You went well above that mark? an amazing feat. What was your approach to generate such a strong support effort?

Tim: My approach to fund raising is very easy: (1) ask early, (2) ask often, and (3) don?t take ?no? for an answer. This cause is very personal to me and I don?t hesitate for one second to reach out to people who are blessed with health and financial resources to help those less fortunate.

MP: I was thrilled that I could contribute to this cause. To help create a world free of MS would be a dream come true. This type of an event and the success it has earned already, drives home the power of the collective human spirit. I can imagine the time that is required on your end to do your part as a Team Member. Do you participate in other events throughout the year, or is this your big outreach effort?

Tim: For me personally, this is my major fundraising focus. I start my fundraising activities about six months before the event and don?t take my foot off the gas until the last day.

MP: All the monies donated will go towards the North Florida Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The event is this weekend (Oct. 1 and 2). Can we still donate up until the day of the event, or even after?

Tim: ABSOLUTELY?.donations will continue to be received until November 1, 2011 for this particular event.

MP: How can we help, in addition, to donating to TEAM PGA TOUR for this event, and for future events?

Tim: For those located in the vicinity of this event [St. Augustine to Daytona, FL}, we are always looking for volunteers. In addition to the 2,500 riders, it takes over 1,000 volunteers to make this events happen. If you are not in this area, the National MS Society is always looking for volunteers.

MP: It can take a considerable effort to volunteer one?s time for any cause. Tim?s Aunt is badly afflicted with MS, so Tim is going to bike for her and millions of others suffering from this incurable disease.

MOSCOW (AP) ? Vladimir Putin on Saturday agreed to run for the Russian presidency in 2012, almost certainly ensuring his return to the office he previously held for eight years and likely foreshadowing more years of strongman rule. His United Russia party also approved his proposal that the current president Dmitry Medvedev take over his Putin's role as prime minister.

Putin ruled Russia as president from 2000-2008 with a steely command that was widely criticized in the West as a retreat from democracy. Because constitutional changes have extended the presidential term to six years from four, Putin's power is likely to be even more enhanced. If he wins two terms in a row, Putin will have been atop the Russian hierarchy for almost a quarter century.

Putin's nomination at a congress of the United Russia party end months of intense speculation as to whether he would seek to return to the Kremlin or whether he would allow the more mild-mannered and reform-leaning Medvedev to seek another term in next year's election.

Despite apparently growing discontent among ordinary Russians with the party, United Russia exerts such an overwhelming presence in the country's politics that Putin's election and Medvedev's switch to the premiership is virtually ensured.

Not only have genuine opposition parties been marginalized, but Putin's personal popularity is immense among Russians who laud him as the strong and decisive figure needed by a sprawling country troubled by corruption, an Islamist insurgency and a vast gap between the impoverished and the grandiosely super-rich.

The presidential election, for which a date has not been set, is preceded by national parliamentary elections on Dec. 4, in which United Russia will seek to retain its dominance; the party has 312 of the 450 seats in the current parliament.

Putin started a carefully orchestrated series of manuevers at Saturday's session of the party congress by proposing that Medvedev head the party list for the December elections. Medvedev then proposed that Putin be the party's presidential candidate, and Putin returned to the stage to accept the proposal and express support for Medvedev as prime minister.

The congress approved the moves with no apparent opposition.

Moving Medvedev to the premiership could set him up to take the brunt of criticism for austerity measures that Putin has warned will be necessary for Russia amid global economic turmoil.

Putin also proposed Saturday that Russia's richest citizens face higher taxes. The flat income tax that came into effect during Putin's 2000-2008 presidency has been widely praised as improving tax collection and Putin's proposal would not change that, but he called for increases in consumption and real estate taxes that hit the rich comparatively harder.

The period for formal submission of presidential candidates' names has not yet begun, and it is unclear who might choose to challenge Putin for president.

Putin became prime minister in 2008 after two terms as president, stepping aside because of constitutional term limits, but as Russia's most powerful and popular politician he nonetheless overshadowed Medvedev, his handpicked successor in the presidency.

Medvedev was widely seen as a caretaker figure. As president, he has struck a reformist posture, calling for improvements in Russia's unreliable court system and for efforts against the country's endemic corruption. But his initiatives have produced little tangible result.

Putin, who built his popularity on the back of strong economic growth, told the party congress on Friday that salaries and pensions would continue to grow, and he promised increased funding for education, health care and housing.

But he also cautioned that the government may need to take unpopular steps to cope with the global financial turmoil.

"The task of the government is not only to pour honey into a cup, but sometimes to give bitter medicine," Putin said. "But this should always be done openly and honestly, and then the overwhelming majority of people will understand their government."

Denon has managed to stay on the bleeding edge of network audio integration over the past couple of years by embracing DLNA certification, Internet radio and, more recently, Airplay?early in the game and integrating it into high-end audio gear. The company?s A/V receivers were among the very first to offer access to these music destinations, which have handily eclipsed the CD as a source of entertainment for much of the music listening population.

Now that almost every A/V receiver, TV and Blu-ray disc player manufacturer has gotten the memo on the importance of network audio integration, we?re seeing support for Pandora, Rhapsody, Last.fm, Internet radio and DLNA in everything from entry-level A/V receivers to $400 televisions. That being the case, it?s fair to wonder: Who in the world would want a $500 stand-alone device that serves up what is already built into so many other products already and can be had from other standalone components (like the?Squeezebox Touch) for half the price? That question has already been posed by more than just a couple of snarky bloggers in reaction to Denon?s announcement of the DNP-720AE, a standalone network music player that provides Wi-Fi access to just about every sort of digital music file as well as good ole? AM/FM radio and Apple?s Airplay, then processes it through a high-end 24-bit, 192 kHz DAC. ?So, we figured we would throw an answer out there.

Audiophiles (and not just the crazy tweakers you see sitting around at high-end audio shows smoking cigars, sipping Johnny Blue and listening to Pat Benetar on vinyl through a $7,000 turntable rig with amplification that costs more than your car) probably will. Then there?s the folks out there that own two-channel integrated amps instead of an 11.2 receiver, and those who have vintage gear and don?t feel like hooking up a glossy, plastic-housed touchscreen with questionabe fidelity to their 1970?s tube rig. Those folks might dig it, too.

We think Denon?s DNP-720AE might be worth a look and listen. The??DNP-720AE will play just about any file you might care to download or create from your physical music collection. FLAC, WAV, super-high-bit-rate AAC and WMA lossless? it does them all, and pumps it out through a high-quality DAC, so the files will (hopefully) sound really good when you listen to them, which is more than can be said for most network media players under $500.

Is $500 (not $660 as has been falsely reported) a little much for such a thing? Maybe, but keep in mind that there are similar devices ?that cost a good bit more. The Logitech Transporter SE, for instance, goes for over $1000 and even Marantz?s NA7004 goes for about $800.

Granted, it?s a niche product, but we think fan?s of Denon?s sound will find this addition to the network audio player market an appealing one.

Digital panoramas of rangelands could be rich source of research data

A scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is exploring how rangeland ecologists could use high-resolution digital panoramas to track landscape changes.

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) hydraulic engineer Mary Nichols uses a digital camera to create a single high-resolution landscape panorama that users can zoom in on to study individual plants, animals or specific features in the landscape.

Nichols works at the ARS Southwest Watershed Research Center in Tucson, Ariz. ARS is USDA's chief intramural scientific research agency, and this work supports the USDA commitment to enhancing sustainable agriculture.

To create these images, Nichols places a digital camera on a robotic camera mount and takes a series of pictures as the mount rotates. Then a custom computer program stitches the pictures together to create a panoramic image. In the end, hundreds-and sometimes thousands-of individual detailed photographs become part of a single high-resolution landscape panorama.

In October and November of 2008, Nichols created three rangeland panoramas in Arizona to see if scientists could use the images to monitor riparian areas, wildlife or invasive plants. The resulting panoramas were so detailed that she could count the number of elk in a distant herd, and even evaluate the condition of each animal.

Nichols could also identify stands of invasive buffelgrass, which turns golden yellow in the fall and presents a striking contrast to surrounding vegetation. With this information in hand, it was possible to document the extent of the buffelgrass invasion in the Santa Catalina Mountains. This provided a baseline assessment of the plant's establishment that could be used to track its subsequent spread.

Researchers can share their panoramas by posting them on www.gigapan.org. Nichols is collaborating with other researchers to develop a website specifically for high-resolution rangeland panoramas.

Results from this work were published in 2009 in Rangeland Ecology & Management.
