Pivothead Video Recording Eyewear

In the late 1990's, Warren Ellis wrote a comic book called Transmetropolitan. It was about a gonzo journalist who covered politics in a cyberpunk future. One of his signatures was a pair of unique glasses that worked as a camera, recording video and taking photos whenever he wanted. Pivothead's Video Recording Eyewear does the same thing?all without the politics, cyberpunk, or drug-fueled diatribes found in the comic book. Despite those omissions, this $349 (direct) pair of sunglasses is one of the most useful head-mounted high-definition video cameras we've tested. While it's not cheap and video quality isn't top-notch, Pivothead?offers one of the best ways to record exactly what you're looking at.

Design
Pivothead glasses come in four different frame styles (Aurora, Durango, Moab, and Recon), each with multiple lens choices. The Durango lenses are full-rim glasses, the Moab and Recon are half-rim glasses, and the Aurora is a single-lens goggle-style pair. Each model has at least one dark-lensed version, the Moab and Recon have clear-lens versions, and green, amber, blue, and violet lenses are scattered across the four lines.

I tested the Durango model with smoke lenses, which together look like an ordinary pair of sporty sunglasses. You can also get reflective, clear, or color-tinted lenses, depending on the style. All models are $349. The plastic is thick, but feels a little cheap, and doesn't compare in style or build quality to sunglasses from the likes of Oakley or Ray-Ban.?The glasses come with a hard case and a micro-USB-to-USB cable for charging and transferring files. Each pair comes with 8GB of onboard storage, letting you record approximately 80 minutes of video. There's no card slot for expansion.

Besides the small lens on the bridge of the glasses, the camera parts are tough to notice if you don't know they're there. The Power button is a small nub behind the bulk of the left temple, on the underside of the arm. A small rocker button on the top of the temple controls recording; pressing the rocker forward turns video on and off, while pressing the rocker backward takes still photos, which can be shot while recording video. The temples are more than a centimeter thick, but they flow into the design of the glasses, and the arms thin out to fit more comfortably around the head, with rubber padding on the inner sides.?

The only other hints that the glasses are actually a video camera are the micro-USB connection behind a small rubber door near the power button and a series of three small LEDs located on the inside of the left temple, just out of your peripheral vision. The LEDs indicate if the glasses are on, recording, charging, or connected to a computer. Pivothead decided to keep the LEDs out of the line of peripheral vision so they wouldn't get in the way of users performing high-risk activities like extreme sports. Unfortunately, the LEDs are very difficult to see in bright light. An audible tone to let you know the glasses are recording would help here.

Since the Pivothead glasses have only three buttons, you need to use either a computer or a smartphone to change recording settings. By plugging the glasses into your computer through a USB cable, you can choose the video resolution and frame rate, as well as photo resolution, burst mode, and even the focus settings. Free software is available for PCs and Macs to adjust the settings and simplify downloading files. You can also control the glasses and stream video online through an Android or iOS device with Pivothead's optional $99 Air Pivothead, a Wi-Fi-equipped SD card reader.

Performance
Pivothead eyewear offers a nearly perfect first-person perspective, thanks to the camera's position right between your eyes; it records exactly what you're looking at, from the angle you're facing. This design is a big improvement over side-mounted helmet cameras like the Contour+ ($499, 3 stars) or the Bluetooth earpiece-style Looxcie 2 ($149.99, 3 stars), both of which require you to check that the camera is pointing in the correct direction. If you're wearing the Pivothead glasses, you're recording what you're seeing, and that's all there is to it. The GoPro HD Hero2 ($299.99, 4 stars) remains the best choice if you need waterproof, shock-resistant video; the other cameras aren't as resilient.?

Because the sensor and lens are so small, video quality from the Pivothead is closer to a smartphone's camera capabilities than a dedicated camera or camcorder. It can record video at 1080p30, 720p60, or 720p30, and can capture up to 8-megapixel still photos while recording by tapping back on the rocker switch. But even at the highest quality setting, recorded video isn't particularly sharp. The glasses performed admirably indoors in good light, but slightly overexposed the video (above) on a sunny day at Coney Island. Still photos looked surprisingly crisp in my tests, but you'll get better performance from a compact camera with a decent lens and sensor. Audio quality isn't quite as good, and the microphone picked up the sounds of my allergies almost as well as it captured my surroundings.

The glasses offer an impressive 75-degree field of vision with little to no distortion, a boon when similar action cameras go for wide lenses at the expense of having a fisheye effect. Still, this is an action camera, and its ability to shoot 720p video at 60 frames per second makes it useful for sports or other activities that suit themselves to a first-person perspective.

Pivothead's Video Recording Eyewear is one of the most useful takes on the head-mounted camera idea I've seen. By simply moving the camera to the middle of a pair of glasses, it offers a better first-person view than any other action camera we've tested. The glasses I tested are unremarkable looking, and they feel a bit cheap for the price, but if you want to record video as you're seeing it, it's one of the best options available.

Business Travelers and their Simple Demands | Enterprise Mobility ...

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012 Annie Livingston, Marketing

Because business travel has been prevalent for a while, you would think hotels would continue to grow with the times and become more accommodating for the average business traveler.

Wrong!? Instead, hotels have been focusing more on trendiness and their urban appearance, less about comfort and the utility of accessories in the room.? (I think I?ve asked myself, ?how do you turn on this lamp?? too many times to count!) We want quick and easy; none of this fancy complicated stuff.

A critical requirement for a hotel to successfully service business travelers is not just internet access , but consistently fast and efficient connectivity -without endless dropped connections! ?According to iPass? Hospitality Findings Report, 95% of business travelers want an internet connection, and 63% confirm this access with the hotel prior to booking a room.? An article in the Sydney Morning Herald stated that the author would be willing to pay $20 per day for connectivity.

How far are you willing to go to stay connected?? Take our Mobile Workforce Survey and let us know!

Corrected: UK insolvency law seals fate of Coryton refinery

LONDON (Reuters) - When Petroplus went bankrupt early this year, many in the industry thought that at least the Coryton oil refinery in England, the most modern and efficient of its five plants in western Europe, would survive.

So far it is the only one to have closed, doomed by the priorities of UK bankruptcy law, the British government's laissez faire approach and strategic calculations by trading houses who saw more opportunities from other refinery assets.

Workers at the plant in Essex, near London, were furious after the administrator PwC confirmed it would be turned into a storage depot in a deal between Royal Dutch Shell, Vopak and Greenergy, meaning the loss of most of around 900 jobs at the site.

A bid from a former Russian energy minister was dismissed by the administrator as not credible.

"We all understand that if there's overproduction in Europe, refineries have to close, but why does it have to be the British one?" said Glenn Relfe, a process operator at the plant.

Those with less of a personal stake in the highly rated plant are also surprised at its closure.

A $150 million pound refit due in September made the plant look less attractive for investors, and increased the need for at least short-term government support to ensure a deal.

But even factoring this in, with a Nelson complexity rating of 12 - meaning it can produce a high proportion of lighter fuels that fetch a higher margin - Coryton was seen as stronger than numerous plants owned by Petroplus and other companies.

"There are 20 better candidates to close, it is a decent size, decent complexity, decent location, none of it perfect, but OK," a trader who buys and sells crude oil and oil products said.

LEGAL FRAMEWORK

It was UK bankruptcy law's emphasis on the interests of creditors, more than any other reason, that saw Coryton close, according to Coryton's joint administrator Steven Pearson of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

"The UK is the most un-influenced market in Europe, where economic logic drives decision making, not politics, so they are not influenced by politicians, unions, or other non-quantifiable factors," he said.

"Statute in this country maximises the overall dividend that creditors receive, in France it is to minimise the impact on employment."

Petit Couronne in France, a much less efficient and modern Petroplus plant, got a pre-election reprieve in February when the country's president at the time, Nicolas Sarkozy, cooperating with Shell, stepped in to provide a multi-million euro support package for the ailing plant.

The British government's line, by contrast, has been that overcapacity in Europe and the UK makes any such state support wasteful and inefficient.

There has been no clear evidence of state support for the other Petroplus refineries, Ingolstadt in Germany, Cressier in Switzerland, and Antwerp in Belgium, though some analysts and traders suspect that there may have been some support behind the scenes at a local or central government level.

STRATEGIC AIMS

These refineries have benefited from the strategic aims of major trading houses Gunvor and Vitol, which have access to Russian crude oil and want more control over how it is brought to market by owning well-placed refineries and storage facilities.

Coryton, which was more focused on supplying a well-fed domestic market, did not benefit from the location of Antwerp, bought by Gunvor, which is in a key trading hub where oil products are priced.

Traders said that the relatively complex German plant Ingolstadt, bought by Gunvor but not currently operational, processes Kazakh Caspian blend grades that are sold by state-controlled Russian oil firm Rosneft.

German bankruptcy law, by contrast with Britain's, played a part in helping keep the Ingolstadt plant alive, Pearson at PwC said, as it requires the government to pay out three months wages for companies that go bankrupt.

"That of course is an enormous subsidy, and if you look at the strategy, they stopped refining, and there still hasn't been a drop refined."

PwC's Pearson said that another feature of Britain's law was that it gave him, as an insolvency practitioner, a strong personal incentive to close the plant rather than keep it open.

Pearson said he had taken on great personal risks, due to personal liability rules that do not exist in continental Europe.

"I took risks on this that have never been taken by insolvency practioners to keep this plant running. The most prudent thing to have done would have been to close it on the first day, and lay everyone off."

Added to this, all the oil at the site was owned by the Petroplus group, rather than the subsidiary company that owned Coryton, so that there were very few working assets that could be used to sweeten a deal, Pearson said.

However, for workers facing unemployment the fact remains that a plant which was seen as a cash cow for the group is now the only one to be closing. Some feel that Britain is making a sacrifice that will benefit competing refineries on the continent.

"It seems like the government is underwriting jobs and prosperity in mainland Europe at our expense," Coryton process operator Relfe, who will soon be made redundant, said.

Cressier in Switzerland, in which Vitol now has a stake, is seen as more strategically important for the land-locked mountainous nation, than Coryton is for the UK which has plentiful ports as well as ample refining capacity.

In the United States, refineries which were on the critical list have been rescued too, making the closure of Coryton even harder for those working there to take.

For example, in April, Delta Airlines became the first U.S. airline to buy a refinery to control the cost of jet fuel.

(Editing by Anthony Barker and Sandra Maler)

(This story was corrected in paragraph 18 to state that Gunvor, not Vitol, bought the Ingolstadt refinery)

Warning: Burglars read the obituaries, too

By Herb Weisbaum, The ConsumerMan

Losing a loved one is painful enough. Imagine the horror of coming home from the funeral to find your home burglarized.?

That was the nightmare awaiting Cindy and Dennis Hidgon of Clarkson, Ken., last week after the couple buried their son Christian, who had been murdered a few days earlier.?

?When I walked in, you know, I think I did just almost fall,? Cindy Hidgon told WLKY news. ?I thought, ?Dear God, you don?t do this.? They had to be just totally heartless people.??

The house was ransacked while everyone was gone. The thieves took laptops, jewelry, guns and cash.?

?It?s not the monetary value of what they took. It?s like they totally humiliated us in our own house,? Dennis Hidgon told WLKY.?

Kentucky State Police say the burglars assumed the house would be empty while everyone was at the cemetery.? It?s possible, police say, there was an accomplice at the funeral.?

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. ?Obituary burglaries,? as they are sometimes called, are happening across the country.

In March, burglars broke into the home of Normaline and Robert Skees in Hardin County, Kentucky while she was at the cemetery burying her husband of ten years. Kentucky State Police say the thieves took several guns, jewelry, coins and more than 30 pocket watches.?

"I cannot even describe in words what it felt like to have all that stuff that he had spent his entire life collecting gone in such a short time,? Normaline told WAVE TV.

Last month, Sherriff?s deputies in Snohomish County, Wash., (just north of Seattle) arrested three men for more than a half-dozen obituary burglaries that took place between December of 2011 and March of this year.

Burglars broke into the home of John and Danutsia Burgy while they were attending his mother?s funeral. They got away with nearly half a million dollars in jewelry and family heirlooms. On what was an incredibly sad day, the Burgys had to deal with losing their financial security.?

?They cleared us out,? John Burgy told KOMO TV. ?I mean, they took anything of any value at all.?

Many of the stolen items had sentimental value. The burglars took papers and artifacts dating back to World War II that belonged to Danutsia?s parents, including her mother?s wedding ring. They also grabbed John Burgy?s awards, citations and commission papers from 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves.?

?In their world, we?re all a bunch of dang suckers,? Burgy told KOMO. ?And they probably look at us as just marks.??

Shari Irenton, Communications Director for the Snohomish County Sheriff?s Department says an empty house is an inviting target for thieves.?

?It just makes it a lot easier for criminals to get in, spend as much time as they want inside and to get out,? Ireton tells me.

Some funeral homes now warn about the risk of burglary. On its website, the Cypress Fairbanks Funeral Home in Houston, Texas, suggests a number of ways to help the bereaved family. Along with answering the phone, greet visitors, and coordinate food, they also list: ?House-sit to prevent burglaries during the funeral and visitations.??

Any time you?re going to be gone for an extended period, especially when it?s fairly obvious (such as a funeral, high school graduation or vacation) get a house sitter or ask the neighbors to watch the place and report any suspicious activity.?

?People looking out for each other is the best form of crime prevention,? Ireton says.?

And as harsh as this may sound, don?t post funeral details on social media sites. Bad guys read those, too. Your funeral notice just lets them know when the house will be empty.?

Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad people in the world. Remember that and act accordingly to protect yourself.

SpaceGhostPurrp And A$AP Rocky Rift: Beyond Repair?

It was all good just a week ago, but now SpaceGhostPurrp and A$AP Rocky are at odds.
By Rob Markman

It was all good just a week ago, but now SpaceGhostPurrp and his Raider Klan have fallen out with A$AP Rocky and the A$AP Mob.

Purrp — who was responsible for producing Rocky's "Keep It G" and "Pretty Flacko" and rhymed alongside Rock on "Purple Swag: Chapter 2" — sat with MTV News in May and broke down his relationship with the A$AP Mob, but last week, he revealed in a YouTube video that their union is no longer.

"We Raider Klan, man. We got our own sh-- going on. And that's how the f--- it is. We ain't A$AP," SpaceGhost said in the video, which has since been taken down. "I showed love to them n---as last year and some sh-- went down and we don't f--- with each other no more."

It was a different story from the one Purrp told MTV News when he sat down with us in May. "Me and the Mob, we reached out to each other through the Internet. We showed love to each other. We had a good time," he said of his A$AP relationship, which has since soured. "I came up to New York and met up with him, we got to know each other real well, and then we just became a little family.

"I'm affiliated with A$AP. If I see him, we still do our handshake, we still got love, we're real close homeys," he added.

Still, Purrp — who released his debut album, Mysterious Phonk: The Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp, last week — has always made a clear distinction between the A$AP Mob and his Raider Klan crew, which originated in his hometown of Miami.

The beef is said to have started after Rocky's groupmate, A$AP Twelvyy, got into an altercation with Matt Stoops from Purrp's Raider Klan. Music site Mostly Junk Food has posted screen shots of deleted SpaceGhost tweets in which he accuses Twelvyy of attacking Stoops.

While the beef does sound serious, Purrp told MTV News of a misunderstanding that he and Wiz Khalifa had prior to working together on Wiz's Taylor Allderdice mixtape. Maybe after a conversation, he and Rocky can reach a similar accord.

Do you believe SpaceGhostPurrp and A$AP Rocky can work out their differences? Let us know in the comments.

3 Video Marketing Tips for Your Online Business | Internet and Email ...

Video marketing as a means for promoting anything, just about, has been streaking like a meteor in the past few years. In this article we will be looking into a few effective video marketing tips that give results.

Your video?s title plays an important role in the overall result of your marketing campaign. Searching for videos online is like using a search engine with different keywords. If you were to look for gardening videos on a video sharing site, you might use gardening hints, or gardening methods. So your aim should be to leverage this title to the fullest extent, so that you not only get ranked for your targeted keywords but also reach out to your target audience easily. You will do this by using relevant keywords, but keeping in mind that you want to keep the title simple. You must be sure that you are paying attention to the keywords, they must make sense and stay on topic of the video. You want to make the title eye catching, as this is the first thing people focus on when they find the video. You want to be able to grab peoples attention with a well worded title. If you have ever done any copywriting, you have learned about the importance of a good title. It is pretty much the same for video titles. You want to portray the purpose of the video clearly. The title of the video is the best place to do just that. Remember that when you?re creating your title, you have to make it short and snappy, and at the same time make it convey what the video is all about. It can take a bit to fully grasp the concept, but the end results are effective.

If viewers want to embed your videos on their sites, they only have to copy and paste the code, so make sure you let them do this. This is a way to get both more views for your videos and also quality backlinks from the websites that use your videos. This means there?s no reason you should want to prevent people from doing this, as it only helps you. Remember, every time someone embeds your video on their site, it gives their visitors a chance to see it, and some of them may do the same, which can cause your video to spread virally.

One thing that makes video marketing stand out from others is that people can give their views and feedback. More people will be interested in your videos when they see the number of comments and ideas posted as well.

In conclusion, video marketing can be seen as a simple and effective way to drive targeted traffic to your website, without actually paying for it.

One thing you need to realize concerning this discussion about affiliaterevolution is it can become as effective as you want; it depends on how you scale your promotions.

(AP) ? Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Northern Ireland on Tuesday to celebrate the British territory's hard-won peace in a town that suffered one of the IRA's worst massacres ? and inspired its greatest moment of Christian forgiveness.

Catholic and Protestant leaders from across Ireland united in Enniskillen at an ecumenical service in the monarch's honor as, outside in wind and rain, several thousand people waved Union Jack flags and banners honoring the queen amid an unrelenting din of pealing church bells.

The monarch's long-awaited meeting with former Irish Republican Army commander Martin McGuinness comes Wednesday in Belfast. But the start of her Northern Ireland tour was devoted to Enniskillen, where a no-warning IRA bomb in 1987 killed 11 Protestant civilians and wounded 63 others as they commemorated British dead from the two world wars.

"She's a total lady. We were nervous, but she made us feel at ease," said Stephen Gault, who was among a group of bombing survivors to meet the queen and her husband Prince Philip in a Protestant minister's home. Gault was wounded that day, while his 49-year-old father Sam was killed.

"Today brings back some terrible memories, to be sure," Gault said, "but above all it shows us that the Enniskillen victims have not been forgotten."

Widespread revulsion at the Enniskillen slaughter proved a threshold event in Northern Ireland's four-decade conflict, spurring McGuinness and other IRA chiefs to begin sounding out peace terms with Britain. McGuinness, now the senior Catholic in Northern Ireland's power-sharing government, refused to meet the queen during her landmark visit to the Republic of Ireland last year but says the time is finally right to mark lasting reconciliation with his old enemy.

But first the queen highlighted the impressive resilience of Enniskillen, whose British Protestant and Irish Catholic residents long avoided succumbing to the worst of Northern Ireland's sectarian passions. Locals invited the queen into the town's neighboring Protestant and Catholic cathedrals. The queen received thunderous applause as she entered St. Michael's Cathedral, her first visit to a Catholic Church in Northern Ireland during her 60-year reign.

Earlier, as she and her husband Prince Philip were honored at the Protestant St. Macartin's Cathedral, leaders of all the main churches took turns leading 700 dignitaries in hymns and prayers. The Protestant leader of the unity government, Peter Robinson, read from the Golden Rule of the Gospels. But no figures from McGuinness' party, the Irish nationalist Sinn Fein, were present in Enniskillen.

The pretty lakeside town, renowned for its fishing and its easy-going civility, barely featured in the conflict before that terrible Sunday morning in November 1987, when an IRA bomb beside the town's war memorial buried a crowd of Protestant families in rubble ? and one of its survivors moved the world as he described saying goodbye to his dying daughter beside him.

"She held my hand tightly and gripped me as hard as she could. She said, 'Daddy, I love you very much.' Those were her exact words to me, and those were the last words I ever heard her say," a bloodied Gordon Wilson, an Enniskillen draper, said hours after the bomb killed his 20-year-old daughter Marie, a nurse. "But I bear no ill will. I bear no grudge. Dirty sort of talk is not going to bring her back to life. She was a great wee lassie. She loved her profession. She was a pet. She's dead. She's in Heaven and we shall meet again."

Of her IRA killers, he said: "I will pray for these men tonight and every night."

Wilson later met IRA commanders face to face to appeal for a cease-fire that finally came in 1994. Enniskillen's peacemaker died of a heart attack a year later aged 67, but others who survived the carnage that day, some maimed for life, said Wilson's spirit was guiding Tuesday's celebrations.

The queen is making her 20th trip to Northern Ireland since ascending to the throne in 1952. Her visit officially is to celebrate her 60th anniversary as monarch, but it is highlighting dramatically improved times in this long-turbulent corner of the United Kingdom following the U.S.-brokered Good Friday peace accord of 1998, and the 2007 formation of a stable Catholic-Protestant administration to replace British rule from London.

Despite the continuing threat from small IRA factions still plotting gun and bomb attacks, her trip was announced weeks in advance, a radical departure from the previous policy requiring a media blackout until her arrival. Security precautions were substantial but lower than the norm, with police in flak jackets lining the town's Church Street.

McGuinness, whom British and Irish officials say was an IRA commander from 1971 to 2005 when his Provisional IRA faction disarmed and renounced violence, has been the senior Catholic in Northern Ireland's power-sharing government since 2007. His longtime Protestant enemies, once deeply opposed to his involvement in governing a land he sought to overthrow by violence, today often express respect and even admiration for his leadership as a peacemaker.

McGuinness still is dogged by questions over his insistence that he quit the Provisional IRA in 1974 after he was convicted of membership in the outlawed group. Experts on Irish republicanism universally dismiss his claim as a lie designed to protect him from potential criminal prosecution or lawsuits by victims of Provisional IRA attacks. McGuinness' group killed about 1,775 people, including the queen's cousin Lord Louis Mountbatten in 1979.

Ed Moloney, an expert on Irish republicanism who wrote the definitive 2002 account "A Secret History of the IRA," said McGuinness was the Provisional IRA's chief of staff and "gave the order for him (Mountbatten) to be killed."

"The top IRA general on Aug. 27th, 1979, was Martin McGuinness. Without his say-so, Mountbatten would probably have lived for many years more," Moloney wrote on his blog Tuesday.

"While much of the media coverage has dwelt on the significance of the handshake from the point of view of Sinn Fein, the person who has actually made the greatest concession here is surely the queen," Moloney wrote. "Ask yourself this question: If you were asked to shake the hand of the man who killed your favorite uncle, would you do it?"

Sweet Tea and Cornbread: Sweet Tea....The House Wine of the South!

I originally didn't think I would write a post on sweet tea, because to be honest it has been covered by every southern food blogger out there.?? However, people still ask about how to make sweet tea and since the name of my blog is 'Sweet Tea and Cornbread' it is only right that I post a sweet tea recipe.? Also, when I started really thinking about the role sweet tea plays in the life of most southerners and in my growing up, I felt I owed it some respect.

I really don't remember when sweet tea wasn't part of my life. I am not sure when I started drinking it, but I am pretty sure it was more than likely before I could walk.? It was always what was served with our night time meal which we usually call supper.?? There is a food blog that I have followed for? a few years now and sometime ago I was reading her post on sweet tea, she said that the first time she was allowed to eat at? a girlfriend's house, she was stunned to see that the children were not served tea, but big glasses of milk.?I had the exact same experience...well sort of.? My experience got a little more involved than just the realization that not all kids got to drink sweet tea with their supper.? Do you feel a story coming on here?? I will try to make it short!

When we were kids, we played all over our street, up and down, next door, in the big field behind our houses...which my father and some other neighborhood men turned into our own softball field.? It was back when kids could still be kids and have some freedom.? We rode our bicycles to the store, we walked to school, we travelled from yard to yard, driveway to driveway...playing basketball, softball, doing gymnastics, and having all day monopoly marathons.? With all of this freedom there were two things we were told not to do...1.) Do not go into anyone's house for anything.? If you had to pee, you trucked your little butt home and hoped you made it.? It took special permission or an act of congress to be allowed to play in anyone's house for a day. The mothers or fathers?had to?confer on such an event.? 2.) You did not eat at any one's house, as in sit down and eat, when they stopped to eat their lunch or supper.? Even if they begged you, if it was time for them to eat, you came home.? There were a couple of exceptions to this rule...if you were asked to spend the night and congress approved it or if the mother called your mother (or father) and they discussed it. Usually when I asked?to eat at someone else's house, my mother would?ask why I wanted to, we had perfectly good food at our house? Mama seemed like she didn't really get?it sometime, but then just when you thought she was so dense, she turned?out to be?right.?I always?hated that...lol. ???

I finally got my first approval to eat with my best friend's family when I was probably in the third or fourth grade.? It was exciting, but made me nervous also, because eating at someone's house other than a relative or a church family without my parents was?a big deal.?? Church folks were a different thing all together and I seemed to get to do a lot of things with them, but looking back I realize that was almost like family.

When we sat down for my first dinner with my?friend, everything looked like it would be alright.? There was nice roast cooked with carrots and potatoes, green beans, corn, rolls...it all looked pretty good to me.?? Anytime I visited anyone the food was? big concern for me, because?I??had been around enough to know it wasn't always good or not as good as Mama's.??I spied a big pitcher of sweet tea on the?counter...that works.? Then, the milk comes out of the refrigerator and 5 big glasses of?it was being poured.? Surely, these people did not drink 'milk' with their supper!? Nobody?informed me of this when I accepted the invitation.? You see, I didn't like milk.??It actually made me feel sick at times and I certainly never drank it with supper.

I ate my food and never touched my milk, which I thought nobody would be rude enough to mention...wrong.? Suddenly, everyone at the table was?discussing?the fact that I wasn't drinking the?milk.? I had six sets of eyes all trained on me and being a very insecure child in a new situation, I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me. ?The father decided I might have one of those 'milk allergies'.??My mind quickly decided that a milk allergy would be good to have...I bet that was it!? Was there also a liver allergy because that stuff made me gag also.? This allergy thing could come in handy for so many detestable things we were made to eat.?? However, suddenly the oldest girl, who was supposed to be my best friend, announced "She does NOT have a milk allergy!? She gets in trouble every day at lunch for not drinking her milk. Even the cafeteria lady comes out and gets on her about it!"? So much for best friends and all of that.? Then the youngest child, a little boy about 3 or 4 started doing a sing song about me being a 'bad girl'.? That kid always did get on my nerves...lol!??? This whole thing ended with them pouring me a big, cold glass of... guess what....ice water!? And guess what was for dessert?? Ice cream with chocolate syrup on it!? Guess who didn't get any because they might have that pesky milk allergy???

Needless to say, I didn't eat at their house again for about a year.? It took that long to get over it.? I was never so glad to eat at our?own table in our kitchen the next night and drink my big ole glass of sweet tea.

Now, this is how I make my sweet tea and there are as many different methods and rituals and recipes for sweet tea as there are for biscuits and cornbread, so if you don't make it this way it's not a?big deal.

Bring the water to a boil and as soon as it boils, turn it off and cover it with something.? This is called steeping the tea and makes all of the difference in the world.? If you steep your tea, you do not have to use as much tea.? I just cover this pan with a little plate.?I lost the top to it long ago somehow.? My mother always covered her pan with?a tin pie pan.?? She now makes her tea in the microwave and wants me to tell you that is the way to go these days. It's ok, I guess, but?I still make mine on the stove.? Steep the tea for at least 30 minutes and an hour is even better.? Tea should have some color to it, not be almost clear.? It should be the color of good KY bourbon, but not as lethal..lol.

Put 1 1/2 - 2?cups sugar in?a glass 2 quart pitcher and pour the tea, which even after an hour will be warm, over the sugar.?Mix until the sugar is dissolved.? Fill the pitcher to the top with water and stir again.? Sweet tea tastes better made in a?glass pitcher and I prefer it served in glass.? For me,? I also prefer it best when just made, not refrigerated.? Pour it over ice and serve with? wedge of lemon.?? The amount of sugar is something people vary on, and most recipes I see do not call for enough sugar, but you sweeten to your liking.? The tea must be sweetened while a little warm, not after it is cold, because the sugar will not dissolve in cold tea.?I do think the farther south you go, the sweeter the tea gets, and even though I am from Kentucky and not the deep south, I think I really belong in the deep south when it comes to tea!

Canadian military ups Asian presence

sub
RIMPAC 2012 off Hawaii marks the first overseas deployment of the submarine HMCS Victoria.

Report an error

TORONTO?-?

Then there were two.

Last month China sent its first aircraft carrier Shi Lang to sea for trials. At 66,000-tons, the reconfigured former Soviet ship is a significant new player in a building South Asia arms race that has drawn the attention of both the US and Canada.

Now India has followed suit. Its refurbished aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya began long-delayed sea trials June 8, leaving Sevmash shipyard in northern Russia for the White Sea.

After a $2.3 billion conversion at Sevmash ? originally contracted in 2005 for $943 million ? the former Soviet vessel now sports a full flight deck and bow ski jump, allowing aircraft launches without catapult assistance.

The 45,400-ton Vikramaditya will remain at sea for the rest of June and India hopes to begin initial flight operations within 12 months.

That?s not all. The Indian Navy is confident it will have two fully-fledged aircraft carrier battle groups (CBGs) by 2015 or so despite slippages in refit of the Vikramaditya and construction of a 40,000-ton indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) at Cochin Shipyard. India does lack long-range attack submarines for escort and a close-in defence weapons system for the capital ships, but it is a start predicated on experience.

Unlike China, India has been operating escort aircraft carriers or almost 50 years. It brings a core of naval pilots and fully developed doctrine to the task of maintaining fixed wing flight operations at sea, although never on a scale demanded by the sheer size of the Vikramaditya.

Both these ships represent a southern shift in the global balance of military power that the US and more recently Canada have acknowledged.

It also comes in a year when, for the first time, Asia?s military spending will surpass Europe?s, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

The U.S. Navy recently confirmed it will be sending its most advanced ships and aircraft to the Asia-Pacific region as it builds its biggest presence there since the end of World War II.

Admiral Cecil Haney, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, revealed two weeks ago that under a policy recently outlined by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, a full 60 per cent of the US Navy?s fleet will be deployed to the Pacific by 2020.

There will also be a forward deployment of troops that already includes a permanent US Marine brigade for the tropical city of Darwin in far north Australia and other troops and assets in Singapore.

Further possible staging posts include the Philippines, South Korea as well as Japan.

For its part, Canada is seeking willing allies in the Asia Pacific region with a view to building and maintaining a military hub.

?We?re doing the rounds, signaling Canada?s intention to reassert our credentials in the Pacific,? is how Canadian Defence Minister Peter MacKay describes our new Asian posture.

Although Canada?s footprint will be nothing like that of the US, or the expanding military might of the likes of China and India, it will involve something more than planting a flag on a deserted stretch of coral atoll.

The most likely scenario will see a port facility made available in a trading centre like Singapore with access to an airfield. MacKay said any regional military hub would be similar to the arrangements Canada has reached with Kuwait and Jamaica, to give it military footholds in the Middle East and the Caribbean.

Canada?s new military engagement with Asia will be visible sooner rather than later and starts Friday at the biannual Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) naval exercises off Hawaii.

Canada is contributing a major contingent of military assets to what is the largest naval exercise in the world. The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) alone will provide five surface ships and the maiden overseas deployment of the submarine HMCS Victoria.

The RCAF will send 15 planes including seven CF-188 Hornet fighter jets, surveillance planes and refuellers, as well as helicopters, a dive team and 150 infantry soldiers from the Canadian Army?s 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia?s Canadian Light Infantry.

A total of 1400 Canadian personnel will be involved.

At the command level, Canadian officers will hold three senior leadership positions in RIMPAC 2012.

Rear-Admiral Ron Lloyd will be the Deputy Commander Combined Task Force; Brigadier-General Michael Hood will be the Combined Forces Air Component Commander; and Commodore Peter Ellis will serve as the Commander Combined Task Force 176, an amphibious Task Group led by the United States Ship Essex.

All of which lives up to Defence Minister MacKay?s perception of Canada?s new ?we need to be present? engagement with Asia and the Pacific.

How that squares against any cutbacks in future Canadian defence funding is yet to be made clear.

Nintendo 3DS XL ups the size of your mobile games for $199

New, larger 3DS to hit stores in August

Nintendo's glasses-free 3D handheld,?the 3DS, has had quite a few ups and downs in its relatively short life ? from massive?launch numbers to sales so low that a?huge price cut was needed to revive it. Now, the company is banking on a complete redesign to help boost by introducing the 3DS XL, a device that has all the bells and whistles of the standard 3DS, but with much larger screens.

The 3DS XL will hit stores on August 19 for $199.99, and comes in both blue and red color schemes. That price gets you a system with a 4.88-inch top screen and 4.18-inch bottom screen ? a 90% size increase from the standard model. Aside from that one, major change, the system is essentially identical to its smaller brother, and will of course be compatible with all current 3DS titles.

The original 3DS isn't going away, and will apparently remain at its $169.99 price point, leaving consumers with a choice as to whether a 90% screen size increase is worth the $30 premium. The 3DS XL's August 19 launch date matches up with that of the upcoming 3DS title?New Super Mario Bros. 2, so if you were planning on picking up the handheld in time for some Mario madness, you may want to consider the newer, bigger handheld.

Information flow in the brain is not a 'one-way street'

ScienceDaily (June 22, 2012) ? A longstanding question in brain research is how information is processed in the brain. Neuroscientists at the Charit? -- Universit?tsmedizin Berlin, Cluster of Excellence NeuroCure and University of Newcastle have made a contribution towards answering this question. In a new study, they have shown that signals are generated not only in the cell body of nerve cells, but also in their output extension, the axon. A specific filter cell regulates signal propagation.

These findings have now been published in the journal Science.

Until now it has been assumed that information flow in nerve cells proceeds along a "one-way street." Electrical impulses are initiated at the cell body and propagate along the axon to the next neuron, where they are received by extensions, the dendrites, acting as antennae. However, the team around Charit? researchers Tengis Gloveli and Tamar Dugladze has demonstrated that this model needs to be revised. They discovered that signals can also be initiated in axons, i.e. outside the cell body. This happens during highly synchronous neuronal activity as, for example, in a state of heightened attention. Moreover, these axonally generated signals flow bidirectionally and represent a new principle of information processing: on the one hand, impulses propagate from their origin towards other nerve cells; on the other hand, the signals also backpropagate towards the cell body, i.e. in the "wrong direction" down the one-way street. A potential problem is that backpropagating signals could lead to excessive cell activation.

However, the researchers found that backpropagating signals do not reach the cell body under normal conditions. The reason for this, the scientists discovered, is a natural filter that prevents these signals from passing. "Axo-axonic cells, an inhibitory cell type, regulate signal propagation and thus occupy an outstanding strategic position," explains Tamar Dugladze. Through the filter function, these cells allow signals initiated at the cell body to pass, but suppress backpropagating impulses generated in the axon. By this means, excessive activation of the cell body is prevented. In experiments, the scientists could show that when this filter function is deactivated, backpropagating signals are allowed to pass, resulting in higher cell activation.

These filter cells can become damaged in various neurological diseases. The consequent misregulation of signal flow, in turn, has fatal effects on information processing in the brain. "Results of this study shed new light on the central question of how signals are processed in the brain. In addition, these findings could help us better understand the development and progress of neuronal diseases such as epilepsy, which involves excessive hypersynchronous activity of large sets of neurons. This knowledge could open up new therapeutic approaches," says Tengis Gloveli. The neuroscientists will therefore focus their future research on both basic understanding of the mechanisms of signal flow in the nervous system, and the relevance of these mechanisms in the genesis of epilepsy.
